He was given the sentence by Criminal High Court of Justice in Edo State and prior to his conviction, this police man was no longer with the police force as he was dismissed.
His name is Constable, Joseph Omotosho and was attached to the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squared, SARS, of Lagos State Police Command.
He was given the sentence after he was found guilty together with others including Corporals Adeleke Adedeji, Abena John, Oniyo Musa and Henry Shobowole who escaped during the Benin Jail breaks occasioned by the recent #EndSARS protest.
Per what we gathered, this police man was arrested in connection to the death of young man, Benson Obodeh.
It was revealed that this guy was arrested at his home on May 21, 2015, and the same day after his arrest, he was reported dead.
It was gathered that Benson was subjected to severe torture that led to his death. It was that the police took the suspect’s ATM card.
The police then forcefully obtained his pin number before his death and withdrew N330, 000 from his account.
When the incident occurred, the former Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth Nwosu lied that the death of Benson occurred as a result of mob attack when he was arrested by neighbours in Benin.
The former police PPRO said;
“It was a case of mob action and the police had to rescue him, on the way to the hospital, he died and the corpse has been deposited at the mortuary in Benin City. We are investigating the circumstances that led to his death as well as the result of the autopsy. What I can tell you now is that he was an armed robber.”
It was later discovered that the police officers were responsible for his death and one of the persons who is Constable, Joseph Omotosho was arrested and subsequently given a death sentence.
The Edo State Government has launched a manhunt for the other policemen who are on the run as we speak.
